These are the two most-photographed small towns in Colombia, and travelers building a first-time itinerary often assume they have to pick one. The honest answer: if you have more than 10 days, do both. If you have a week or less, here's how to decide.
The core difference
Guatapé is a reservoir town in Antioquia, about 2 hours from Medellín by bus or car. The draw is El Peñón de Guatapé — a 220-meter granite monolith with 740 steps to a viewing platform over a flooded valley dotted with fingerlike inlets — plus a colorful lakefront town covered in painted zócalos (relief panels).
Salento is a mountain town in Quindío, in Colombia's Coffee Triangle. It's 5–6 hours from Medellín by direct bus, or about 45 minutes by flight to Armenia or Pereira plus a 40-minute transfer. The draw is the Valle de Cocora, home to the wax palm — Colombia's national tree, and the tallest palm species on Earth — plus real working coffee farms you can tour.
Climate and altitude
Guatapé sits around 1,900m and stays warm — 20–28°C most of the year, with the reservoir adding humidity. Salento sits higher, around 1,900–2,000m in town but the Cocora valley climbs toward 2,400–2,900m, so mornings are genuinely cold. Pack a real jacket for Salento; a light layer is enough for Guatapé.

Salento is the easy win if you care about coffee, hiking, and cooler mountain scenery, and you're willing to dedicate 2–3 days including transit.
