You've got your flights to Colombia booked and your Bogotá and Cartagena hotels reserved. Now someone tells you that you absolutely have to see Guatapé. Good news: adding it to an existing itinerary is easier than you think, because it sits right next to Medellín — Colombia's domestic flight hub.

The Logistics

Guatapé is a 2-hour bus ride from Medellín. Medellín connects to both Bogotá and Cartagena with frequent, cheap domestic flights (often under $50 USD one way on Wingo or Viva). So the question isn't whether you can add Guatapé — it's where in your existing trip to insert a Medellín stopover.

Option 1: Between Bogotá and Cartagena

This is the cleanest option. Fly Bogotá → Medellín. Spend a day or two in Medellín, then day-trip or overnight in Guatapé. Continue from Medellín → Cartagena by flight. You add 2–3 days to your trip and the routing makes geographic sense.

Option 2: After Cartagena

If your trip flows Bogotá → Cartagena, add Medellín + Guatapé at the end. Fly Cartagena → Medellín, do Guatapé, then fly Medellín → Bogotá for your international departure. This works if you have flexibility on your return date.

Option 3: Day Trip From Medellín (Minimum Commitment)

If you can only spare one extra day, fly into Medellín the evening before. Take the 6:00 AM bus to Guatapé, do La Piedra and the town, return by 6:00 PM, and fly out the next morning. It's rushed but doable — and you'll still see why everyone raves about it.

What You'll Need to Book

One additional domestic flight (or adjust existing flights to route through Medellín). One night of accommodation in Medellín or Guatapé (or both). No advance booking needed for the Guatapé bus — buy your ticket at Terminal del Norte the morning of.

Cost to Add Guatapé

The incremental cost is surprisingly low. A domestic flight is COP 100,000–250,000 ($27–68 USD). The bus to Guatapé is COP 18,000–20,000 ($5 USD). A hostel night in Guatapé is COP 40,000–80,000 ($11–22 USD). Activities like La Piedra entrance (COP 25,000) and a boat tour (COP 50,000–100,000) round it out. Total: roughly $80–150 USD for a full Guatapé addition, depending on accommodation level.
