Guatapé is a year-round destination. The temperature barely changes — hovering around 19°C (66°F) every month. What does change is the rain, the crowds, and the prices. Here's how to pick the right time.
Dry season (December–March, June–August): The best weather. Bright mornings, warm days, minimal rain. December and January are the most popular months — expect bigger crowds and higher accommodation prices. June–August is the sweet spot: dry weather with fewer tourists than the holiday season.
Rainy season (April–May, September–November): Afternoon showers are common, usually lasting 1–2 hours. Mornings are often clear. The upside: fewer tourists, lower prices, greener landscapes. If you don't mind a rain jacket, this is a perfectly good time to visit.
Key fact: Guatapé averages 19°C (66°F) year-round. There's no winter. There's no summer. The sun rises around 6 AM and sets around 6 PM every day. You're 6° north of the equator — seasons barely exist here.
Wednesday or Thursday — Guatapé is emptiest midweek. You'll have El Peñol Rock practically to yourself before 9 AM. Restaurants are quieter, boats have fewer passengers, and accommodation is cheapest.
Avoid Sundays (especially Sunday afternoons). Guatapé is Medellín's favorite weekend escape — Sunday lunch brings the biggest crowds. The bus back to Medellín can have standing-room-only lines by 3 PM.
Climb El Peñol at 7:00–8:00 AM. The rock opens at 8 AM officially, but arrivals start earlier. Morning light is best for photos, temperatures are cooler, and tour groups don't arrive until 10 AM. The views are clearest in the morning before afternoon clouds build.
Explore the town at midday. While the climbing crowd is at the rock, the zócalos and waterfront are relatively empty.
Take the boat tour at 2:00–3:00 PM. Afternoon light on the water is beautiful, and you'll be back in time for the last bus if needed.

Sube a la Piedra a las 7:00–8:00 AM. La luz de la mañana es la mejor para fotos, las temperaturas son más frescas y los grupos de tour no llegan hasta las 10 AM.
Explora el pueblo al mediodía. Mientras las multitudes están en la Piedra, los zócalos y el malecón están relativamente vacíos.
Toma la lancha a las 2:00–3:00 PM. La luz de la tarde sobre el agua es hermosa.
